The storm recovery effort has been difficult and challenging for everyone, especially for those homeowners whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina or Rita. Governor Blanco’s Road Home Program is intended to help every homeowner in the disaster area. Many eligible homeowners have not yet applied for their benefits. It was found, that despite all the efforts of the state to get the word out, many eligible homeowners including owners of mobile homes, had not applied because they were unaware of the program or felt it did not apply to them. Many did not realize the program has several options for them to select from and they are not required to rebuild or repair in order to receive available funds. In order to maximize the number of homeowner participants that do take advantage of the grant assistance program, the State of Louisiana has chosen to utilize the extensive network of independent Community Action Agencies across Louisiana to assist them in locating, identifying and assisting eligible homeowners that have not yet applied.
CAPC was specifically set up to coordinate those efforts. By pooling the resources of those independent agencies we are adding a very powerful tool to the recovery effort and will provide, without cost to the homeowners, the necessary assistance they may need to make an informed decision about their futures. CAPC will work to eliminate the problems that may be keeping someone from applying by providing private, one-on-one consultations, assisting with the preparation and submission of the application, providing transportation where necessary, and overcoming other obstacles that a homeowner may have encountered with the process.
It is our goal to make sure that everyone who is eligible for grant benefits receive the benefits they are entitled to. It makes no difference where you are living right now. If you, or someone you know is a homeowner with a home damaged or destroyed by Katrina or Rita, and the home had at least $5200 in damages and you or they have not yet applied for the grant benefits of the Road Home program, or you are encountering obstacles with the process, you are urged to call CAPC, toll free, at 1-877-522-2728.
